Comparison of advantages and disadvantages between powder metallurgy and sand casting

Comparison of advantages and disadvantages between powder metallurgy and sand casting
The scope of powder metallurgy and sand casting is similar, and mold casting, commonly known as "sand casting", usually includes sand mold casting and shell film casting. Generally speaking, the tensile properties of foundry castings are the same as those of traditional powder metallurgy parts and metal injection molded parts. The mechanical properties of powder metallurgy parts, especially the impact energy, are higher than those of foundry castings. The choice of process often depends on the size of the parts, and large parts should be manufactured using sand casting.
Within the feasible range of both powder metallurgy process and sand casting, the cost of tools and materials for sand casting is usually lower, but the production cost is higher. The manufacturing tolerance of powder metallurgy parts is relatively small, requiring minimal or no subsequent machining, while castings require extensive machining. Powder metallurgy process is more suitable for high production of parts. For small, complex shaped, and high-precision parts, metal injection molding may be more economical than sand casting.
