MIM Stainless Steel Parts

Metal Injection Molding (MIM) is a novel powder metallurgy near-net-shape forming technology derived from plastic injection molding techniques. The MIM process is a forming method in which a plasticized mixture of metal powder and a binder is injected into a mold; the material subsequently undergoes debinding and sintering to ultimately produce a finished metal part. Products manufactured via the MIM process not only possess the complex geometries and high precision characteristic of parts produced by plastic injection molding, but also exhibit physical, chemical, and mechanical properties comparable to those of forged components. Consequently, it has been hailed as "the hottest component-forming technology of today" and "the forming technology of the 21st century."

MIM Stainless Steel Parts

MIM stainless steel parts are miniature, precision stainless steel structural components manufactured using the Metal Injection Molding (MIM) process. The range of standard materials covers the full spectrum of stainless steels, including grades such as 304, 316L, 17-4PH, and 440C. By overcoming the structural limitations inherent in traditional CNC machining and die-casting processes, MIM enables the single-step molding of miniature parts featuring complex geometries, thin walls, irregular shapes, undercuts, and intricate micro-holes. These components combine the inherent material advantages of stainless steel-including corrosion resistance, high strength, high-temperature stability, rust and wear resistance, and optional non-magnetic properties-with the production benefits of the MIM process: high-volume output, exceptional precision, and superior cost-effectiveness. Consequently, MIM has emerged as a leading manufacturing solution for precision components across industries such as 3C electronics, medical devices, hardware, smart devices, and automotive systems. Leveraging advantages such as high precision, superior hardness, strong corrosion resistance, high structural versatility, low cost, and export compliance, MIM stainless steel parts represent the optimal mass-production solution for complex, miniature stainless steel precision components. They serve as a comprehensive replacement for traditional machining and die-casting processes, meeting the accessory and component requirements of a wide range of precision equipment globally.

Mainstream Materials and Key Performance Parameters

Our facility supports the customization of a full range of stainless steel alloys. Different materials are tailored to specific application scenarios, satisfying diverse requirements regarding rust prevention, hardness, corrosion resistance, magnetic properties, and high tensile strength:

  • 304 Stainless Steel: A general-purpose, rust-resistant stainless steel known for its good toughness, excellent rust resistance, and high cost-effectiveness. It withstands acid and alkali corrosion and is suitable for standard precision structural components and general-purpose parts that do not require high strength or extreme wear resistance.

  • 316L Stainless Steel: A medical-grade, highly corrosion-resistant material. It withstands corrosion from seawater, acids, alkalis, and perspiration; offers top-tier rust prevention; and exhibits low magnetic permeability. It is widely used in medical devices, wearable technology, and precision bathroom fixtures.

  • 17-4PH Stainless Steel: A precipitation-hardening stainless steel that can be heat-treated to increase hardness. It features high hardness, excellent compressive strength, superior wear resistance, and strong resistance to deformation. Its tensile strength far exceeds that of standard stainless steel, making it ideal for load-bearing, wear-resistant, and high-strength precision structural components.

  • 440C Stainless Steel: A high-hardness martensitic stainless steel characterized by exceptional wear resistance-the highest among these alloys. It is frequently utilized in precision cutting tools, wear-resistant hardware, and miniature bearing components.

Core Advantages of the MIM Process

Compared to traditional die-casting, CNC precision machining, and powder metallurgy processes, MIM stainless steel parts offer exceptionally distinct advantages, providing a perfect solution to the manufacturing challenges associated with complex, miniature components:

  1. Integrated Molding of Complex Structures: Capable of producing thin walls, deep holes, threads, contoured surfaces, undercuts, and hollow structures. Minimum wall thickness can reach as fine as 0.2mm. Complex geometries that are impossible to mass-produce via traditional machining methods can be formed in a single step, eliminating the need for secondary or multi-stage processing.

  2. Ultra-High Precision and Strong Consistency: Dimensional tolerances are stably controlled within... ±0.02 to ±0.05 mm; sintered density exceeds 96%; parts exhibit uniform density and exceptional dimensional consistency with no batch-to-batch variation, making them ideally suited for automated assembly.

  3. Maximized Cost Reduction, Ideal for Mass Production:** Material utilization exceeds 98%-significantly higher than CNC machining-thereby eliminating raw material waste. Utilizing mold-based forming, mass production incurs no labor cost premium, making it suitable for large-volume orders ranging from tens of thousands to tens of millions of units annually.

  4. Superior Performance, Comparable to Forgings:** Parts feature excellent overall density, free from porosity or sand inclusions. Their strength, toughness, and wear resistance far surpass those of standard powder metallurgy components, allowing them to serve as direct replacements for expensive precision-machined parts.

Product Technical Specifications

1.Feedstock and Injection

Powder: Gas-atomized stainless steel powder (D50: 6–12 μm). High in Chromium (12–18%) and Nickel (8–14%); offers excellent oxidation resistance but presents high viscosity.

Feedstock: Exhibits the highest viscosity among materials, necessitating high injection pressures (120–180 bar). Mold filling is challenging-prone to short shots or cold shuts-and therefore requires mold heating (80–120°C).

2. Debinding and Sintering

Debinding:Requires strict oxygen control. Thermal debinding must be conducted at a slow rate (1–2°C/min) to prevent the oxidation of Chromium.

Sintering: Performed at 1300–1380°C under high vacuum or an Argon atmosphere. Achieving full densification is particularly challenging; resulting density ranges from 7.4 to 7.65 g/cm³ (94–97% of theoretical density).

Shrinkage: 18–20%. Anisotropy is slightly more pronounced than average, resulting in dimensional fluctuations of ±0.5–0.8%.

3.Dimensions and Precision

Tolerance: ±0.5–0.8%; dimensional control is challenging. However, 17-4PH stainless steel exhibits significantly less deformation following precipitation hardening.

Surface Finish: Ra 1.2–2.5 μm. After sintering, the surface is bright and corrosion-resistant, making the parts suitable for direct use in medical or food-contact applications. 4. Mechanical Properties (Typical Grades)

316L (Austenitic): 510–550 MPa, Elongation 40–50%; Excellent corrosion resistance, good toughness.

420 (Martensitic): 1200–1400 MPa, 52–57 HRC; High hardness and wear resistance, moderate corrosion resistance.

17-4PH (Precipitation Hardening): 1000–1200 MPa, 40–44 HRC; High strength and toughness + Corrosion resistance + Easy machinability.
